Eavesdropping is the act of secretly listening to the private conversation of others without their consent, as defined by Black's Law Dictionary. This is commonly thought to be unethical and there is an old adage that eavesdroppers seldom hear anything good of themselves.

History

Ancient Anglo-Saxon law punished eavesdroppers, who skulked in the eavesdrip of another's home, with a fine; the eavesdrip was also sometimes called the eavesdrop. Eavesdrop also means a small low visibility hole near the entrance to a building (generally under the eaves) which would allow the occupants to listen in on the conversation of people awaiting admission to the house. Typically this would allow the occupant to be prepared for unfriendly visitors.

Early telephone systems shared party lines which would allow the sharing subscribers to listen to each others conversations. This was a common practice in rural America which resulted in many incidents and feuds.

Is mobile broadband via a dongle sufficiently secure from eavesdropping to use it for Internet banking?
Q. I am thinking of taking out a Vodafone mobile broadband contract here in the UK. Although not essential it would at times be useful to use it for banking/shopping. Would this be risky?

A. Make sure you use an encrypted setup and you will be fine. There is not much money to be made cracking private routers. The crooks go for cracking company networks, especially networks that handle lots of credit card transactions. It takes the same amount of work and is a lot more lucractive

A. I'm going to qualify this by saying upfront that it depends on where this occurred and whether you were there legally, but... Recording a conversation taking place in a place where you're legally present isn't a violation of Florida or federal law. So... There are not sentencing guidelines as "eavesdropping" in and of itself isn't a criminal offense. There might be something if you were unlawfully present and there may be some issues revolving around admissibility depending on the circumstances, though.

A. What is he using to eavesdrop? What are you using for your phone? If you are using a cordless phone, quit using one! You might check with the telephone company to see if they can check if there's any devices at the Network Interface that may be used for this. n
