Ethics (also known as moral philosophy) is a branch of philosophy that addresses questions about morality—that is, concepts such as good vs. bad, noble vs. ignoble, right vs. wrong, and matters of justice, love, peace, and virtue.

Major branches of ethics include:

  • meta-ethics, about the theoretical meaning and reference of moral propositions and how their truth-values (if any) may be determined;
  • normative ethics, about the practical means of determining a moral course of action;
  • applied ethics, about how moral outcomes can be achieved in specific situations;
  • moral psychology, about how moral capacity or moral agency develops and what its nature is; and
  • descriptive ethics, about what moral values people actually abide by.

Within each of these branches are many different schools of thought and still further sub-fields of study.

Why is it unethical to exclude information from a job application?
Q. I found an ad for a potential job. The only problem is that the ad specifically mentions that it is "a continuing, full-time position." I know I will be returning to college in the fall. Why is it unethical to apply for the job without mentioning this fact?

A. Two come to mind: 1. You're putting the employer in a bad situation knowing that you only want the job for a short time. The employer will waste time and money training you, only to have you leave. They must then start the process all over again. 2. Someone else won't get the job who is qualified and who will stay. Not fair to that person.

Unethical to utilize search engine keywords that don't appear on but are related to a website I'm having made?
Q. I'm having a website created for myself. I've been told it is unethical in it's creation to allow search engine words/phrases (to find my website) that do not physically appear on my webpage. All of the key word descriptors would be legitimately descriptive and relevant to my webpage. Is this unethical with penalties possible?

A. No. The keywords are used to direct traffic relevant to your market. If you use the wrong keywords you will simply attract the wrong market. Search engines don't ask your permission to link you, so their use of your keyword list is their problem. No penalties unless the words you use are descriptive or invite unlawful acts.

What are some unethical issues that may arise on the Wall Street marketplace?
Q. I know insider's trading/information is unethical but would it fall under a category like greed or stealing? But besides, insiders trading/information, could you all name some more?

A. Trading forward against your customers, which is also illegal, which is using knowledge of the order book to profit off of transactions which are not yet in the market. There is also an example, which is not illegal, of trading forward against your customers. When companies have dividend reinvestment plans they have to buy the shares in the market, dealers not only know this but also the size of the DRiP and so slowly buy up stocks when the prices are depressed near the date and then issue them to the company at inflated prices due to the large size of the transactions. People who believe they are paying no commission to buy stocks may be paying a much higher spread than had they made the purchases on their own. There are a number of… [cont.]
