From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Eavesdropping is the act of secretly listening to the private conversation of others without their consent, as defined by Black's Law Dictionary. This is commonly thought to be unethical and there is an old adage that eavesdroppers seldom hear anything good of themselves...eavesdroppers always try to listen to matters that concern them .. HistoryAncient Anglo-Saxon law punished eavesdroppers, who skulked in the eavesdrip of another's home, with a fine; the eavesdrip was also sometimes called the eavesdrop. Eavesdrop also means a small low visibility hole near the entrance to a building (generally under the eaves) which would allow the occupants to listen in on the conversation of people awaiting admission to the house. Typically this would allow the occupant to be prepared for unfriendly visitors. Early telephone systems shared party lines which would allow the sharing subscribers to listen to each others conversations. This was a common practice in rural America which resulted in many incidents and feuds. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What should I do about my eavesdropping boss? Q. My boss frequently eavesdrop on conversations that I have while at work. Whether they are work or personal contacts. Then she turns around and brings the conversations up at my review (I have never said anything innappropriate for work during these convos). Is this appropriate? What should I do? Make sure your work buddy is in on it. Then when she brings it up ask her how she knows that and if she understands the term PRIVACY. Or what my friend always does when she thinks her mother is listening in she says...UMMMm wait a minute. There are big ears here right now. Try that. If you notice her listening make sure when you're talking to someone she hears you say midsentence loudly...WAIT...There are big ears around here and stare her down. That will stop it! Boss or no boss, she deserves a swift kick. Answered by Sweetie - Fri Mar 26 07:47:09 2010 Do you think Bush is eavesdropping on your computer when you are linked to the web? Q. With all of the cookies and spyware out there, don't you think that Bush and the government monitor your internet activity and even tap into your computer? I am guessing they have developed impressive spyware that is not detectable by commercial products. It wouldn't surprise me if it is even disguised as a software update, and that you have even consented to using it when you pushed the "I agree" button. As long as you don't say something like "Gee, I can't wait to do a terrorist attack against a major U.S. city" I don't think they'll come after you. But yes, Big Brother IS watching you...
