Technology is a term referring to whatever can be said at any particular historical period, concerning the state of the art in the whole general field of practical know-how and tool use. It therefore encompasses all that can be said about arts, crafts, professions, applied sciences, and skills. By extension it can also refer to any systems or methods of organization which enable such technologies, any field of study which concerns them, or any products which result. The etymology of the word technology still reflects the modern meaning, coming from the Greek technología (τεχνολογία) — téchnē (τέχνη), an 'art', 'skill' or 'craft' and -logía (-λογία), the study of something, or the branch of knowledge of a discipline. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include "construction technology", "medical technology", or "state-of-the-art technology".

Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms.

Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves the human condition or worsens it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticise the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such as transhumanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communities have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations.

What would you say were the greatest technological advances in history?
Q. What technological advances were most important? Please note: I will not rate answers until the question has expired :) It's interesting to see that the majority of answers are of modern (or modernish! Advances) good answers though :) ta!

A. The wheel has to be right up there, along with writing and mathematics. In more modern times, the invention of formula ( powdered baby milk) in the 1860s, which drastically reduced infant mortality, and antibiotics in the 1930s, have led to a huge increase in human population.

What sort of technological breakthrough should I seek?
Q. What sort of technological study should I present to my local school district to research? I am seeking GEE! - why did no one ever think of this?-discoveries for local high school students to research. Thanks for why has this never been invented?-ideas. I feel simply inspired to return to the teaching-connections I enjoyed as a Substitute Teacher, a few years ago. I enjoyed the w-i-d-e scope of ideas that the students gave me.

A. This might be beyond high school abilities, but some things I think should be invented: A national transportation system based on steel tracks instead of highways, and cars all have magnets built into them so they float over the tracks instead of using tires. The cars could be really lightweight, out of plastic perhaps, and would move by magnetic attraction and repulsion. I'd have them move about by computers, so we could sit back and ride while our destination came up automatically. When we got there, the car would float away, and somebody else could use it. We'd summon one whenever we needed one. Before that happens, I'd power car air conditioners with the waste heat from the cars radiator and exhaust system, just like a gas air… [cont.]

Is it possible for the process of technological development to cease to a halt?
Q. In the sense that, Man builds advanced technological entities to the point that the technological entities can no longer be developed/improved? And if not, why?
Asked by Marvin the Martian - Sat Feb 7 11:20:35 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is possible mostly because there are two processes at work in technology and its application. We create new technologies and put them out there for people to apply to their lives. When we find criticisms of those creations, we modify them, "tweak" them, put our marketable twists on them. So, there are times when the technology market stops adding (creation) new technologies to the market and expends lots of energy trying to tweak the existing technologies. Then there are times when they stop tweaking things and just start spitting useless new developments at the market. It usually takes a little time for the producers of technological products to realize how unusable their first efforts can be.
